From Our Founder, Tom O’Connor
I do something very unique in the mental health field – I help families nationwide get the best from our confounding mental health treatment system and recover from the emotional trauma of managing mental illness in the family. Each family's experience is played out in millions of homes across the US – family members acting as untrained case managers needing competency training, support, and the right tools to solve life’s hardest healthcare challenges.
Everyone want to tell this most intimate of stories – parenting or managing a loved one with a mental illness- to a responsive audience that can understand the subject and and validate the storyteller. In all our lives, it seems that pain and loss feels lessened when we know it is understood or lived by our audience. And our hope emerges when our experience is informed by another's story of success or recovery.
Over the last 25 years I've helped families from Hawaii to Maine, and they all have the same needs–
“I want to feel competent managing my loved one’s mental health.”
“I need quality information from sources I can trust.”
“When my son or daughter is in distress, or worse, I want to understand what’s happening and be ready and able to act.”
And most importantly—
“I am a key stakeholder in the success–or failure–of my loved one’s treatment...but I am completely marginalized by the mental healthcare system.”
It is a scary and frustrating guessing game for most parents and families, even when they have quality support.
And it was these collective voices that created this vision for FamilyPsychConsumer– an online community where parents and families around the U.S. can securely connect and share information about how they are succeeding to get the best from the mental healthcare world; where families in resource starved regions can access the same coaching, support and high quality resources as their peers in big cities; and where parents and families can coalesce their buying power and consumer voices to drive the marketplace to deliver quality, outcomes-based treatment and services, and create a new value-based mental healthcare marketplace.
Our Principles are simple—
Thank you for supporting this vision. Watch our whiteboard video, join our community, and read more about our plan to create value-based mental health care.
