We began with a question:
How can two separate families with a loved one participating at the same hospital or residential program, participate actively or passively in their loved ones' treatment from admission through discharge, experience two very similar or completely different treatment outcomes, and then report a valid, objective and ethical assessment of the facility that could inform another family's consideration of using that facility?
A very LONG question but one that fully reflects the problem we faced.
Parents and families spend over $10 BILLION dollars each year on mental healthcare. As the partners in treatment, private payer of services, and overall steward of the patient life AFTER that treatment, families deserve to privately share their consumer experiences of facilities to "pay it forward" to the next family that needs to make that critical decision– Where should I send my spouse/son/daughter for care and who deserves to get my mental health dollar?
Our answer to that long question was– a valid ethical ratings system based on our Recovery Values, an inventory of traits and customer experiences that reflect environment, staffing, patient engagement, modality best practices, credentialing, and most importantly . . . transparency in measured outcomes. Every community member is invited to securely and anonymously participate in our ‘validation tool’ to ensure their rating is based on an actual facility treatment event by a loved one and then fill out our provider rating tool. All results will be reviewed by our professional navigators prior to publishing it in the community. It is our goal to provide a valid assessment of each facility based on its delivery of a quality customer experience and its promised deliverable– sustained outcome in the life of the patient.
